Licensed Cosmetologist Youth Development Professional (YDP)
Description This position is designed to prepare and educate youth
on career pathways in the Cosmetology field. The Licensed
Cosmetologist Youth Development Professional (YDP) is part of a
team-oriented Club staff dedicated to serving our youth and
supporting an optimal Club Experience. This position will plan,
supervise, and implement a variety of high-yield activities and
targeted programs within a health, beauty, and life skills focus.
This position is responsible for: ensuring youth development
principles are incorporated into cosmetology programs and
activities; providing guidance and discipline to ensure a safe and
positive environment for youth; ensuring the incorporation of
character development, age-appropriate and gender-specific programs
and activities; ensuring that culturally diverse programs are
implemented; and assisting, as needed, in the planning,
implementation, and delivery of activities and programs for youth
ages 6 to 18. Key Roles (Essential Job Responsibilities) Prepare
Youth for Success This position’s primary responsibilities include:
Planning and implementing a variety of cosmetology programs for
members of all ages Providing instructional learning on cosmetology
theory, hair care, skincare, nail care, safety, and building
clientele Recruiting and retaining youth for cosmetology programs
Collaborating with staff to help implement programs throughout the
school year This position helps members make appropriate choices
regarding their education, career, social, physical, and emotional
needs as it relates to health, beauty, and their future goals. The
role includes assessing the developmental needs, interests, and
characteristics of youth to develop targeted programs that result
in an outcome-driven Club Experience. Ensure programs, services,
and activities prepare youth for success—promoting safety, quality
programming, and positive Club appearance at all times. Provide
guidance and role modeling to members. Contribute to the planning
and implementation of the strategic plan by: Planning and
organizing a range of program services and activities such as field
trips, guest speakers, demonstrations, and hands-on workshops
Initiating new programs with the approval of the Program
Director/Unit Director Promoting and stimulating program
participation Ensure quality improvement by monitoring and
evaluating program achievement against target goals, recommending
modifications that respond to member needs, and participating in
weekly Club staff meetings. Participate in local, state, regional,
and national Boys & Girls Clubs programs and competitions as
applicable. Health and Safety Ensure a healthy and safe
environment; supervise members in program area. Maintain the
cleanliness and sanitation of the cosmetology program area.
Maintain an inventory of program equipment and supplies in good
condition; recommend requisitions as necessary. Program
Administration Prepare weekly reports for the Program Director/Unit
Director regarding activities, special programs, upcoming events,
attendance, and other required documentation. Maintain a daily
written schedule and ensure programs begin and end on time
Additional Responsibilities Participate in special programs and
Club events as needed. Evening and weekend work may be required.
May be required to drive a Club van. (Requires valid driver’s
license & three-year clean driving record) Other duties as
assigned. Relationships Internal: Maintains close, daily contact
with Club staff, volunteers, youth members, and supervisor to
receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain
guidelines/instructions, instruct, and advise/counsel. Requirements
Education High School diploma or GED Licensed Cosmetologist Ability
to pass DCF Level II background screening and drug test Experience
Cosmetology experience Knowledge of youth development Ability to
motivate youth and manage behavior Ability to work effectively with
the public Ability to plan and implement quality cosmetology
programs Ability to organize and supervise youth in a safe
environment Work Environment This position generally works M–F, 2
PM–7 PM, with potential for longer hours and occasional weekends
when necessary. Work is conducted indoors and outdoors. Physical
and Mental Requirements Ability to sit, stand, and walk for
extended periods, occasionally bending and squatting Ability to
lift to 20 lbs. occasionally Ability to hear at a normal
conversational level Ability to maintain high energy when necessary
